Featuring Indigenous Hoop Dancer, Lawrence Roy; Singing with Elmer Tootoosis

Lawrence Roy, a proud Saskatoon native, began his hoop dancing journey in 1989. His initial instructor, Delvin Kennedy, introduced him to the intricate style of 21 hoops within the St Mary's Hoop Dance Troupe. Upon entering high school, Patrick Nippi became Lawrence's second mentor, guiding him through the art of the 17-hoop style, which Lawrence mastered. Today, he dazzles audiences with his mesmerizing performance featuring an astounding 30 hoops. Lawrence's passion for hoop dancing extends to teaching, where he shares his expertise with those eager to learn.

Lawrence has proudly passed on his teachings to his children, who, in turn, have become educators themselves. He eagerly imparts his knowledge to anyone interested in the art. Lawrence frequently graces the stages of prominent locations like Wanuskewin, White Buffalo Youth Lodge, Friendship Centre, and various schools in the Saskatoon area and its surroundings. In his performances, Lawrence weaves valuable lessons about the hoop's origin and adds humour to his storytelling.

Join us to celebrate a year filled with remarkable achievements and a reflective look back at 2023.

This event features a captivating performance by Indigenous Hoop Dancer Lawrence Roy, and a soul-stirring musical experience led by Elmer Tootoosis, a member of the Poundmaker First Nation who sings with Young Thunder. Elmer, alongside his family, enthusiastically partakes in powwows and ceremonies, sharing his singing expertise with students at various schools in Saskatoon.
